Newest DoD standard modem expected to become most widely deployed bandwidth efficient modem

Carlsbad, CA – ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq: VSAT) has delivered the 2000^th Enhanced Bandwidth Efficient Modem for U.S. Department of Defense teleport and U.S. Navy operations. The MD-1366 EBEM is interoperable with all legacy U.S. DoD modems, implements Mil-Std-188-165A, and includes new, efficient modes (Mil-Std-188-165B) for high-speed, point-to-point, satellite communications at fixed, quick-deploy, airborne, and shipboard installations. ViaSat also received additional follow on orders for another 100 EBEMs from the U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command (CECOM) headquarters. Users cite increased throughput capacity, enabled by the ability to put more carriers on a single satellite transponder, as the primary advantage of the MD-1366 over other military point-to-point satcom modems.

The EBEM includes a number of improvements over Mil-Std-188-165A modems:

More bandwidth capacity through a new set of open standard features
Lowered system cost and weight with integrated Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 security, protecting all control, monitoring, and user traffic
Certification for the new Wideband Global Satcom system
Operation on commercial or military satellites in the X-, C-, Ku-, and Ka-band
Compatible with legacy military standard hardware

“Software defined MD-1366 modems can interoperate with deployed U.S. DoD and intelligence terminals and provide a cost-effective performance upgrade path that can either reduce satellite costs or increase throughput,” said Ric VanderMeulen, VP and general manager of Government Satcom at ViaSat. “We were selected by the U.S. Army as the price and performance leader and we anticipate that EBEM will become the most widely deployed point-to-point modem in the U.S. DoD inventory.”

The EBEM features advanced modulation and code rate options to optimize bandwidth efficiency, tighter carrier spacing to increase bandwidth capacity, improved signal-to-noise performance for power efficiency, and rates up to 155 Mbps compared to 20 Mbps rate for the modems it replaces. AUPC (Automatic Uplink Power Control), which keeps the link connected and maintains a constant throughput rate in harsh environments, ensures high performance regardless of heavy weather and other variations in satellite signal strength.

New Phase II Contract Award for Integrated Waveform Development and Fielding

Performance upgrades for demand assigned and ad hoc UHF SATCOM services planned for Fall ‘09.

ViaSat Inc. received a $9.3 million award from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) to continue the development of the UHF SATCOM Integrated Waveform Channel Controller. This second phase of the Integrated Waveform (IW) development enables demand assigned services on UHF SATCOM networks to support new applications that require better performance and higher channel throughput.

IW, a requirement of the Department of Defense (DoD) Standardization Program, is designed to prolong the life of the UHF Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) SATCOM System through a series of network upgrades. DISA has increased the UHF SATCOM military performance specifications to match the need for faster, more efficient, and easier-to use communications.

The previous phase of this effort, awarded in April 2007, focused on implementing only pre-assigned services into the IW. In this new phase, ViaSat will enable demand assignment of preplanned services, support of ad-hoc services, and dynamic bandwidth allocation; all controlled by the ViaSat Channel Controller. During this final phase of the IW controller development, DISA will upgrade the IW Channel Controller architecture by integrating ViaSat RT-1828 radios at all Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Stations.

First Quarter Results – Record Awards and Revenues

ViaSat, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) announced financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2009. The fiscal first quarter results include record net new contract awards of $205.9 million, record revenues of $153.0 million and non-GAAP diluted net income per share of $0.29 or $0.20 per share on a diluted GAAP basis.

“Our results for the first quarter were consistent with our plans – and new orders exceeded our expectations,” said Mark Dankberg, CEO and chairman of ViaSat. “While GAAP and non-GAAP earnings per share increased 54% and 38% respectively, compared to last year, our first quarter earnings were adversely impacted by several cents per share due to a higher tax rate resulting from the expiration of the federal R&D tax credit, which we anticipate will be retroactively extended sometime this year. We are especially pleased with growth in new orders and the corresponding strength of our core businesses. We also see opportunities for continued favorable order flow in our second quarter which would, combined with the strong first quarter awards, position us quite well for the current fiscal year.”

In our fourth quarter of fiscal year ended March 28, 2008, the company made management and organizational structure changes to better align the organization with our recent strategic changes, which resulted in a new segment presentation. We have recast the data for the prior fiscal year periods presented to conform to the current period presentation. Our Satellite Services segment is primarily comprised of our expanding maritime and airline broadband and enterprise VSAT services plus our ViaSat-1 satellite. OurCommercial Networks segment comprises our former Satellite Networks and Antenna Systems segments, except for the Satellite Services segment.

Government Systems Segment

The Government Systems segment recorded quarterly revenues of $88.6 million, a 25.5% increase over the first quarter of fiscal year 2008. The revenue growth was primarily related to higher sales of certain information assurance products, next generation military satellite communication systems, and video data link systems partially offset by a decrease in development sales of next generation tactical data link products. New contract awards in our Government Systems segment for the first quarter of fiscal year 2009 were $149.9 million.

Commercial Networks Segment

For the Commercial Networks segment, revenues were $62.9 million for the first quarter, which was a 12.0% increase from the first quarter of fiscal year 2008. The revenue increase was primarily derived from higher revenues related to the development of mobile satellite systems, satellite antenna system products, and our enterprise satellite network product sales, partially offset by a decrease in sales of our consumer broadband products. New contract awards in our Commercial Networks segment for the first quarter of fiscal year 2009 were $54.3 million.

Satellite Services Segment

Our Satellite Services segment contributed revenues of $1.4 million for the first quarter, which was essentially flat with last year. New contract awards in our Satellite Services segment for the first quarter were $1.7 million.

Won a delivery order valued at approximately $52 million for Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) terminals from The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), San Diego.
Signed a new 10 year agreement with KVH Industries Inc. to establish a global Ku-band mobile broadband network using ViaSat-patented ArcLight^® technology. The agreement includes an initial purchase by KVH of three ArcLight hubs and builds on the already successful satellite networks serving business jets, maritime vessels, and ground vehicles in North America, the Caribbean, the North Atlantic and Europe.

LinkStar_S2 provides efficient data transfer for monitor and control of drinking water for entire city

ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq:VSAT) has completed the rollout of its LinkStar®_S2 satellite networking system to ELIOP S.A. (Spain) for data collection, monitoring, and control of drinking and waste water operations for the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration General Directorate (ISKI). ELIOP has integrated its own “SHERPA” supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology with LinkStar terminals to gather information on water reservoir levels, pipeline integrity, water quality, and drinking and waste water distribution management for a community of 15 million customers. ViaSat supplied the complete satellite communication network including the antennas, satellite transmission electronics, LinkStar hub, and 300 network terminals.

“This ISKI network is mission critical in the monitoring and control of the quality and distribution of drinking water to one of the most populous cities in the world,” said Guillermo Bosch, director of sales in Europe for ViaSat Commercial Satellite Networks. “We have a long-standing business relationship with ELIOP, the ISKI local representative for business and support in Turkey, and our LinkStar system has proven to be very efficient for this SCADA application.”

ViaSat Inc. has been awarded a $9.8 million order for Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS) Production Transition Terminals (PTTs). MIDS JTRS is designed to enable the warfighter to use multiple JTRS approved waveforms, such as the Wideband Networking Waveform (WNW), and to increase channel information throughput and security.

With the Department of Defense advocating the software-defined radio approach of JTRS, the Navy has awarded contracts to engineer and qualify JTRS compliance into the next generation MIDS. ViaSat is one of two U.S. government-qualified developers of the MIDS JTRS – or MIDS-J – terminal, which is designed to be plug-and-play interchangeable for U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force platforms that use MIDS Low Volume Terminals (LVT) to retain the investment in MIDS LVT. This award is a follow-on to the initial PTT order received in June 2007 from the Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), San Diego.

The terminal is designed to operate using new communication protocols and perform new applications that will more easily integrate into many host platforms. MIDS-J uses Link 16 and TACAN functions as well as three 2 MHz to 2 GHz programmable channels. MIDS-J provides improvements such as Link 16 enhanced throughput, Link 16 frequency re-mapping, and programmable crypto. This PTT order is for terminals with the three channel 2 MHz -2GHz capability as well as terminals with Link 16 and TACAN functionality only.

System quickly configures C-130 aircraft for U.S. Special Forces missions

ViaSat Inc. has provided the U.S. Special Forces with a new airborne broadband satcom system to greatly enhance its warfighting capabilities. The system is already in use in the Middle East and coverage areas will expand as more terminals and hubs are delivered. This new operational capability, an extension of the ArcLight® mobile broadband system, is installed on C-130 aircraft, primarily for sending high resolution video back to higher command authorities for further analysis and identification. It also provides two way broadband communications for a variety of command and control needs. The U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) is the first military organization to use the new satcom system which taps into the ArcLight commercial broadband satellite network for private business jets and maritime applications operated by ViaSat and SES Americom Government Services.

The C-130 satcom system is built around the advanced ArcLight modem and networking technology using a spread spectrum waveform to enable the use of mobile satellite antennas as small as 29 centimeters in diameter. The antenna is enclosed in a radome attached to a redesigned emergency escape hatch. In a few minutes, operators can configure an aircraft for their specific mission without any permanent aircraft alterations, then quickly return the aircraft to its normal configuration when the mission is complete, while maintaining safety-of-flight integrity. The U.S. Air Force-certified hatch-mount terminal enables secure access to Department of Defense wide area networks at raw data rates up to 10 Mbps inbound and 512 kbps outbound while airborne.

“This system was first demonstrated by the U.S. Joint Forces Command, was JITC Certified, declared ready for network-centric operations, and now is operational on these USSOCOM aircraft,” said Larry Taylor, ViaSat Government Satcom director of business development. “This new broadband service provides a much greater level of real-time situational awareness while leveraging commercial satcom technology to greatly reduce operational and support costs compared to other systems.”

The ArcLight spread spectrum technology assures regulatory compliance with FCC and ITU rules governing adjacent satellite interference. Licensed in over 25 countries, the system delivers a terrestrial broadband experience to aircraft, small maritime vessels, European trains, and ground on-the-move vehicles using commercial Ku-band satellites. It can also easily adapt to other frequency bands.

ViaSat Receives F-35 Lightning II U.S. Reprogramming Laboratory Award

$12 Million Follow-on Radio Frequency (RF) Stimulator Award

ViaSat Inc. has received a $12 million award from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. for the manufacture, integration, test, and delivery of a Communication, Navigation, and Identification (CNI) Function Stimulator (CFS) for avionics testing of F-35 Lightning II aircraft, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter. This follow-on CNI Stimulator is an integral part of the Verification and Validation Facility (VVF) for the U.S. Reprogramming Laboratory (USRL) at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. ViaSat delivery of the CFS to Lockheed Martin is scheduled for 2010.

The complexity of the avionics systems in state-of-the-art fighter aircraft requires realistic test environments and accurate signal representation. ViaSat RF stimulators provide a true-to-life CNI test environment and reduce the cost of in-flight testing.

New Tampa Office to Serve Growing Government and Defense Information Assurance Customers

ViaSat Inc. is opening a new office in Tampa, Florida to support the ongoing demand for the company’s government information assurance products and services. Employees began moving into the new office, ViaSat’s 11th office location in the United States, in June. An open house is planned for late summer.

The new office will occupy 6,000 square feet at 5550 W. Idlewild Ave in the TIA Airport Area, the western anchor of the Florida High Tech Corridor. The other ViaSat office in the Southeast is located in Duluth, Georgia, and is home to the company’s Commercial Satellite Networks group.

ViaSat AltaSec® information assurance products protect data on classified defense, government, and homeland security networks with powerful, programmable encryption technology, compliant with the HAIPE® IS encryption standard. KVH awards contract for expansion of ArcLight broadband network to near global coverage by late 2009

ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq: VSAT) has signed a new 10-year agreement with KVH Industries Inc., (Nasdaq: KVHI) to establish a global Ku-band mobile broadband network using ViaSat-patented ArcLight^® technology. The agreement includes an initial purchase by KVH of three ArcLight hubs with options for more hubs as the network expands. The new contract will enable network expansion that builds on the already successful satellite networks serving business jets, maritime vessels, and ground vehicles in North America, the Caribbean, the North Atlantic, and Europe. Under the agreement, ViaSat will provide network operation services, managing satellite access and seamless roaming for the ViaSat hubs, and also share in the service revenues.

Together, ViaSat and KVH will establish ArcLight spread spectrum mobile broadband networks in a series of new regions. The coverage expansion is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2008. KVH will be the global provider for maritime service while ViaSat will provide products and satellite network services into aviation markets worldwide.

$52 Million Lot 9 MIDS Delivery Order

ViaSat Inc. has won a delivery order valued at approximately $52 million for Multifunctional Information Distribution System terminals from The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), San Diego. By gathering information into a digital view of the battlefield, MIDS provides greater situational awareness in combat for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and for U.S. defense partners. The secure, high capacity, jam resistant wireless (non-satellite) system connects users with both digital data and voice communications. Delivery of Lot 9 units is expected to begin in May of next year and continue through the first quarter of ViaSat’s fiscal year 2011.

The Lot 9 order includes LVT(1) airborne and LVT(2) ground-based Low Volume Terminals under the Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contract awarded in January 2000. The new award includes LVT(1) terminal variants and spares for E-2D, F/A-18, E/A-18G, EA-6B, and F-16 aircraft, and MH-60R/S and CH-53K helicopters. The Lot 9 order also includes MIDS LVT(2) terminal variants and spares for various U.S. Army, Air Force and Marine Corps applications, as well as MIDS LVT(1) variant terminals for Portuguese and Turkish F-16 aircraft.

Team ViaSat finished third in the 8-person Team division of the RAAM 2008 cross-country bicycle race . After a sendoff at ViaSat June 11, the team began the race at 2:00 p.m. PDT. The race continued day and night over the weekend until finishing in Annapolis, MD.

The team of Kevin Hunter, John Tyner, Ken Larson, Jeffery High, Dan Uglietta, Greg Nesler, Jeremy Gustin and Brad Exmeyer pulled into Annapolis, Maryland Tuesday, June 17 after riding 3,015 miles in 5 days, 20 hours and 16 minutes; an overall average of 21.46 miles per hour.

Eutelsat has signed TelDaFax Communications GmbH as a distributor for Tooway™ satellite broadband service in Germany. Eutelsat broadband affiliate Skylogic will be directly responsible for the distribution contract with TelDafax.

Eutelsat's ground-breaking 2Mbps Tooway broadband service, using the ViaSat SurfBeam® system, is a true high-speed satellite alternative for consumers looking for broadband access in areas with poor or no ADSL infrastructure in Europe. Rolf Diederichs, managing director of TelDaFax estimates that there are more than 1,000 ADSL-free areas nationwide in Germany. Infrastruktura TK is New Authorized Repair Center in Russia and CIS

ViaSat Inc. has signed Infrastruktura TK to become a “ViaSat Authorized Repair Center” for satellite communication system service, repairs, and spares in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The addition of the ITK service center gives service providers in the region an in-country source for fast turnaround of service and support requests for their ViaSat LinkStar® and LinkWay® satellite systems.

“Gaining the expertise of ITK for our repair center will increase the service quality and really cut response time for our Russian customers,” said Robert Feierbach, managing director for enterprise VSAT sales at ViaSat. “With the vast size of the CIS, ITK will reduce the time for customers to get replacement terminals, spares, parts, or repairs by eliminating the need for lengthy import or export procedures in each case.”

The fiscal fourth quarter results include revenues of $147.4 million, net income of $0.41 per share on a diluted non-GAAP basis or $0.33 per share on a diluted GAAP basis and cash flows from operations of $2.2 million. Financial highlights for the fiscal year include record new contract awards of $560.0 million, revenues of $574.7 million, net income of $1.36 per share on a diluted non-GAAP basis or $1.04 per share on a diluted GAAP basis and cash flows from operations of $48.3 million.

“ViaSat completed another growth year in fiscal year 2008, with new records in earnings, revenues and orders,” said Mark Dankberg, CEO and chairman of ViaSat. “Pre-tax earnings rose an exceptional 37% over last year’s fourth quarter and 29% for the fiscal year as a whole, though the expiration of the federal R&D tax credit at the end of our third fiscal quarter constrained our EPS growth for both the fourth quarter and the fiscal year. Pre-tax earnings were driven by strong product revenues, which improved operating margins, and supported a 50% increase in discretionary R&D investments. New orders in the fourth quarter were lower than planned, attributable to timing of specific defense programs; however, the Company’s award volume in early fiscal year 2009 has been excellent and puts us on track to overcome the shortfall.”

Government Systems Segment

The fourth quarter year-over-year increase in revenue resulted primarily from higher sales of government satellite communications and information assurance products. New contract awards in our Government Systems segment for the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2008 were $57.7 million and $306.2 million, respectively.

Commercial Networks Segment

For the Commercial Networks segment, revenues were $61.6 million for the fourth quarter, a 3.2% increase over the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2007. Year-to-date Commercial Networks segment revenues were $248.3 million, a 7.2% increase over the prior year. The revenue growth for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2008 compared to 2007 was primarily related to higher sales of consumer broadband products and antenna system products, partially offset by a decrease in our enterprise VSAT products sales. New contract awards in our Commercial Networks segment for the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2008 were $38.6 million and $249.7 million, respectively.

Satellite Services Segment

Our newly established Satellite Services segment contributed revenues of $1.7 million for the fourth quarter, a 25.4% increase over the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2007. Year-to-date Satellite Services segment revenues were $6.8 million, a 1.9% increase over the prior year. The revenue growth for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2008 compared to 2007 was primarily related to higher revenues in mobile satellite and managed broadband service. New contract awards in our Satellite Services segment for the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2008 were $2.0 million and $4.1 million, respectively.

Selected Fiscal Year 2008 and Recent Business Highlights

Entered into an agreement with WildBlue Communications to supply at least their next 500,000 Ka-band satellite terminals for the WildBlue satellite broadband service. ViaSat also delivered network infrastructure and software upgrades to WildBlue during the year, enabling them to resume selling services in previously sold-out regions.
Extended our relationship and collaboration with Eutelsat, including the launch of the Tooway™ consumer broadband satellite service in Europe, and mobile broadband system on high-speed trains operated by the French SNCF railway. ViaSat is the exclusive provider of broadband networking equipment for the Tooway service, which is a forerunner to services that will be provided by Eutelsat’s new high capacity Ka-Sat satellite (scheduled for launch in 2010). The ViaSat-1 satellite in North America and the Ka-Sat satellite in Europe are expected to be the highest capacity and most cost-efficient broadband satellites in the world at launch.
Shipped over 250,000 SurfBeam® modems and US Monolithics Ka-band transceivers in support of the WildBlue and Telesat services in North America.
Received awards totaling $124 million for Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) Low Volume Terminal (LVT) products, accessory equipment, and next generation data link development programs. ViaSat also shipped over 430 LVT systems during the year.

ViaSat Will Add Capability to Air Force Joint Communication Simulator Under New Task Order

ViaSat Inc. has received a $3.97 million Task Order (TO) for modification of the Joint Communication Simulator (JCS) under an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contract from the U.S. Air Force. The JCS enables accurate analysis of communication system performance without the expense of in-flight testing. This award continues to expand the simulation system capabilities to include new operating modes and communication, navigation and intelligence signals, including integrating Link 16 into government RF communication simulators.

“Link 16 is the preferred tactical data link between coalition forces and this development increases the utility of the JCS by adding this key communication signal to the RF simulation environment.” said Greg Norton, program manager, ViaSat Simulation Systems Group.

For more than 10 years ViaSat has been developing and delivering communication, navigation, and identification (CNI) test systems to DoD customers. RF stimulation from ViaSat goes beyond ordinary simulation and computer modeling techniques to actually stimulate the avionics environment with real signals of RF energy, including RF jamming and background signals.

JCS systems are located at the Air Force Flight Test Center’s (AFFTC) Electronic Warfare Avionics Test and Integration Complex (ATIC) at Edwards Air Force Base (EAFB), California and the Air Combat Environment Test and Evaluation Facility (ACETEF) at the Naval Air Warfare Center - Aircraft Division (NAWC-AD), Maryland.
